Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Although the start end dates can vary slightly depending on the organization and source, Red Ribbon Week generally takes place the last full week in October, with the weekends before and following the last full week included as appropriate celebration dates. This year Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 23-31, 2015.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.

And, perhaps more importantly, Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffikers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.
Enrique "Kiki" Camarena grew up in a dirt-floored house with hopes and dreams of making a difference.

Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out it. "I can't not do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."

The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico investigating a major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, police and government. On Feb. 7, 1985, the 37-year-old Camarena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. Five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him in a car. One month later, Camarena's body was found in a shallow grave. He had been tortured to death. 1

Within weeks of his death in March of 1985, Camarena's Congressman, Duncan Hunter, and high school friend Henry Lozano, launched Camarena Clubs in Imperial Valley, California, Camarena's home. Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifices made by Camarena and others on behalf of all Americans. 2These coalitions began to wear red badges of satin, red ribbons, as a symbol Camarena's memory. The Red Ribbon Week campaign emerged from the efforts of these clubs and coalitions.

Today, Red Ribbon Week is nationally recognized and celebrated, helping to preserve Special Agent Camarena's memory and further the cause for which he gave his life. The Red Ribbon Campaign also became a symbol of support for the DEA's efforts to reduce demand for drugs through prevention and education programs. By wearing a red ribbon during the last week in October, Americans demonstrate their ardent opposition to drugs. They pay homage not only to Special Agent Camarena, but to all men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of our nation's struggle against drug trafficking and abuse. 3

Glenshire Elementary will be celebrating this special week October 26-30 with presentations by our Safe School Ambassadors in the 4th and 5th grades, drug prevention bracelets for all students, pledge signing, and posters.  Research tells us we must present information years before a child is in the situation to make a decision.  Therefore, it is important that elementary age children understand why it is important to have a healthy body and respect one's-self.  Each year Red Ribbon Week takes on a theme.  This year's theme is Respect Yourself, Be drug Free!

Second Step Tip for October

Being assertive means asking for what you want or need in a calm and firm voice.  It is a respectful way to get what you want or need.  Looking forward to seeing all of you tonight at our 20th anniversary party!

The first week of school recommendations

I hope the first week of school went well.  It is wonderful to see the students' enthusiasm and excitement for their teacher, academics, and friends.  This is also a time of transition, earlier bedtimes, hectic after school schedules, and homework.  It is completely normal for both parents and kids to feel overwhelmed and tired.  This would be a good time to set up a routine your child can rely on in order to for them to find a daily rhythm.  Consistency is key.  Additionally, too many after school activities can be tough on a child.  Please read the following discussion on scheduling kids after school.  Kids do need time to just go home and relax, be creative, play, and read.  http://www.childmind.org/en/posts/articles/2014-9-2-extracurricular-activities-pros-and-cons-families
Have a wonderful day!

Welcome Back to School 2015

Welcome back!

It's back to school time!
August 2015

Dear Glenshire Elementary School Families:

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you and your children to the 2015-2016 school year
at Glenshire Elementary. I hope your summer was filled with exciting activities, time spent with
family and friends, and enjoyed at a relaxing pace. The start of the school year is always a
special time for me with all the positive energy that flows through the school!

Helping students succeed is a joint effort. Students are most successful when all of us—
the student, the family and the school are working together. As a collaborative team we are
striving for continuous improvement to create a culture of learning for all students. As a school
community we strive to:

Create an environment where every student feels recognized and valued.
Create opportunities to talk with students and, more importantly listen to them.
Create an understanding that students are active participants in their education and
learning.
Create an environment where students know that the school is dedicated to helping them
learn.

A few tips to help with a smooth transition from summer vacation to the school year are:

Teaching the importance of attending school every day and on time as a life skill
An early bedtime allowing for a solid nine hours of sleep
An alarm clock in your child's room across from the bed
A healthy breakfast to start each day
The backpack ready to go and by the front door
A lunch and snack prepared the night before and in the fridge
The outfit chosen the night before and laid out for the next day
The mode of transportation to and from school discussed the night before and reinforced in the morning
A family dinner, whenever possible, to discuss your child's highs and lows of the day
The week' s Second Step Lesson homework done and discussed as a family
A specific place to do the homework
An extracurricular plan developed by parent and child, looking at time and energy allotment of both

We hope you are looking forward to the start of the school year.  I look forward to seeing all of you on August 31st.

Sincerely,

Rachel Falk
